In His Words
One thing to know about me is that I absolutely love surprises, giving and receiving. So when Heather set out to plan my engagement event, she knew her audience. She planned a fun urban adventure for me that ended with me in her arms.
Let’s start the story the morning of the event. We had just that morning decided to put an offer on a condo in the Mission, and were having breakfast at The Pork Store. During our meal, I brought up the fact that our engagement party was that very night, and joked about how we’d have to explain to our guests that we were only half-engaged (I had proposed to Heather back in November). Needless to say, she held her tongue well and I didn’t expect what was about to happen.
We took the BART back home, talking about the future (“we’re buying a place together!”) and excited about our upcoming party that night. Upon entering our place, Heather noted a folder on the coffee table. “What is this?” she asked with an almost imperceptible smile on her face, and handed the paper to me.
Low and behold! It’s was a QR Code – something which I had only recently become aware of after getting my Android phone. If you’re not familiar with QR Codes, they are little square symbols that you can point your phone at (Android has a built-in reader) which can contain URL links or text messages. So I scanned it with my phone, and was taken to a web page with an address, locker number, and a clue to the locker combo.
A little confused, because I assumed I was going to be cleaning and setting up for the party the whole day, I looked at Heather quizzingly – who told me to grab my scooter and go investigate. My adventure begins!
When I get to the address, I realize that it’s the 24 Hour Fitness. I head up to the men’s locker room (I’m *hoping* it’s not in the women’s!), and find the locker. The clue is “The server error code that indicates that something was not found”. Not that difficult for a web developer, for sure, so I typed in 404. What was inside the locker?
Another QR Code! So I scanned it in, and was greeted with an instruction to send an SMS to a phone number I didn’t recognize. I did so, and received instructions to meet a ‘tall dark and handsome man’ at a starbucks nearby. So I grabbed my scooter and headed to meet what I could only presume was our friend Rafi. 🙂
Upon entering the coffee shop, I immediately recognized Rafi and went over to his table. He proceeded to tell me that, to prove my worthiness, I needed to complete a series of computer science puzzles. Concerned about what might happen if I got any wrong, I did my best! After the puzzle round, Rafi told me to head to the car and that there would be instructions for me there on how to proceed.
Inside the car, I was given another address and an instruction to be there in 30 minutes. So I drove the car and parked in a parking garage there. Nevermind that the address was only four blocks away!
Inside the building I was directed to, I rode the elevator to the 4th floor, and realized that my destination was a Red Door day spa. I wasn’t sure what to expect, and didn’t want to wreak any surprise, so I just identified myself and was led to the men’s locker room to change. Sure enough, it was a massage!
After my relaxing massage, I was led back to the locker room, where I was surprised to find a bag sitting in my locker! Opening the bag, there was a cool t-shirt and a note to say that I should head back to the apartment. I grabbed my things, and headed for the car.
Upon making it back to our apartment, there was a sign on the door that told me that I should check the mail. So I went back downstairs, and opened the mailbox. Inside was an eye mask and a note that told me to put it on and call a number. I waited there with my mask on not knowing what was about to happen…
Someone took me by the shoulder and silently led me back to the apartment, where I lifted the mask and was greeted to signs pointing me towards Heather, who was waiting there with a ring in hand, down on one knee. Of course I said yes!
